The Printing Industry of the Carolinas (PICA) has announced Indexx, Inc. of Greenville as an award winner in the 2017 PICA Awards Competition. Indexx won six Best of Category Awards, one Special Judges Award and six Awards of Excellence, which includes an Award of Excellence in the Digital Printing: Special Effects category for its collaborative work on the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport’s Artist Brunch Invitation, designed by Crawford Strategy.
“It’s an honor to be recognized for our work on this unique piece,” said Jordan Finn, President of Indexx, Inc. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to work alongside local businesses like Crawford Strategy and GSP International Airport who are making great impacts on the Greenville community.”
The invitation was created for an event to celebrate a program initiated by The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District for the selection, commissioning and installation of art to complement the renovations and improvements completed at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP). The art includes two-dimensional artwork and three-dimensional sculptures.
This commission began to highlight the community and take the airport to the next level—beyond simply a functional hub of transportation. GSP has created a venue for the exhibition of art infused with meaning.
To showcase the commissioned artwork, GSP, with the help of Crawford Strategy as its strategic partner, hosted a “Meet and Greet” brunch where local artists across the Upstate were invited to meet the artists, see the artwork and enjoy refreshments. The team wanted to create a unique invitation that matched this special event that pivoted off the idea of travel documents—a passport to the arts. To imitate a real passport, Crawford Strategy and Indexx, Inc. worked collaboratively to incorporate an embossed paper texture and ink, making the invitation feel like a real passport. Crawford Strategy and Indexx worked together to create a design that piqued interest and tied in to the airport’s overall messaging.
“The team at Crawford Strategy is committed to bold, brave ideas that have provided invaluable creative strategies to the GSP brand,” said Dudley Brown, Public Relations Manager at GSP Airport. “Their capabilities and industry knowledge in public relations, advertising and graphic design make them uniquely equipped to bring innovative, integrated solutions to what we’re trying to achieve. We are grateful to Crawford Strategy and Indexx for producing such a special invitation for such a unique event.”
The PICA Awards, established in 1966, has become one of the largest printing contests in the nation. This year, PICA received more than 580 entries from 44 printing companies and 145 entries from high school and college graphic arts educational programs from across the Carolinas. The judges, printing and production experts from outside of North and South Carolina, chose the award winners based on criteria such as: registration, crossovers, clarity and neatness, sharpness of halftones and line drawings, richness and tonal qualities of color, paper and ink selection, ink coverage, difficulty of printing, effective contrast or softness, finishing, bindery, and overall visual impact.
